In September, Academic Support will run a series of three practical workshops on Essay Writing. These workshops will provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills in all aspects of essay writing, from selecting a topic to polishing a draft.
Workshop 1: Scope and Research Statement/Question
Monday 5 September 2022, 10.30 am (AEST), up to 1.5 hours
This workshop consists of activities designed to teach you how to narrow the scope of a topic and then write a pertinent research question. The aim of this workshop is to equip you with tools and strategies to enable you to limit the discussion so that you can then produce a meaningful essay within a specified number of words.
Workshop 2: Outlines to Structure an Argument
Monday 12 September 2022, 10.30 am (AEST), 1 hour
This workshop surveys the many benefits of outlining before drafting and uses activities to introduce you to a range of techniques to develop strong outlines. The aim of this workshop is to prepare you so that you are ready to draft a balanced and convincing essay.
Workshop 3: Drafts – First and Subsequent
Monday 19 September2022, 10.30 am (AEST), 1.5 hours
This workshop focuses on essay writing from first to last draft. You will learn about the structure of an essay as well as the sentence-by-sentence structure of a paragraph and be asked to workshop short samples to develop an in-depth understanding of how to use a critical (third-person) voice and transition/connecting phrases where appropriate. The aim of this workshop is to give you the literary skills needed to produce essays ready for submission.
Each workshop operates independently, but we encourage students who are new to essay writing or lack confidence in producing a good essay to attend all three workshops in sequential order. Please register using the following link: https://forms.office.com/r/wTJvAiju4c
Please note that places are limited due to the interactive nature of the workshops. Registration is essential and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Additional workshops might be run depending on demand (dates and times to be confirmed).
